Vivid, severe, languid. Youth is perhaps best defined by its loss. It represents an ebbing away of the most definitive and urgent version of oneself, along with oneβs unlived lives.
Youth in Parts, is an hour-long assemblage of audio fragments, exploring the parallels between the ephemeral nature of youth and the enduring beauty, uses, and abuse of ancient Greek Kouros statues. This includes YouTube and TikTok videos of teenagers yelling into tunnels and setting off fireworks, archaeological webinars, slowed down β80s electro-pop songs, drones, and text manipulated through an AI voice generator.
The mix features music from Fredrik Rasten, Jason Lescalleet, Robert Rental, The Slits, Prefab Sprout, Frank Ocean, Moin, Gabriel Yared, and More Eaze & Claire Rousay. At the centre of the compilation is a collaboration with ambient musician Infra (Jamie Maule), where an AI voice glitches through a reading of the fragmented narrative created throughout the project, accompanied by textural drones and improvised instrumentation.
Jamie George is an artist based in South East London whose work includes sculpture, music, writing, and publishing. Folium published and distributed the book Youth in Parts in 2024.
